A draft programme for this event, which is being held at Bletchley Park, Milton Keynes, can be found at http://www.bcs.org/sg/docs - document name : SGA 9 April 2003 - Draft Programme. The morning session will consist of presentations from Charles Hughes, the Society's Vice President Member Services, Colin Thompson, the BCS Deputy CEO and Nick Webb, Specialist Groups Support Manager. These presentations will be followed by a Questions and Answers Forum and three specialist talks on metadata, developments in wireless information technology and the recently approved SocioTechnical SG. Following a buffet lunch, most of the afternoon will be hosted by the Computer Conservation Society which has done so much sterling work at Bletchley Park. CCS Chairman Ernest Morris will provide an overview of the SG's activities. John Harper, the leader of the Turing Bombe Rebuild Project, will provide a report on how this fascinating project is progressing. Former BCS President Brian Oakley will then lead a tour of Bletchley Park during which we hope to be able to see both the Bombe and Colossus machines in action as well as visiting the computer museum. SG Treasurers, and others interested in the new Centralised Accounting Services, will also have the opportunity to speak to our finance experts about the pilot scheme that will be starting in May. The Specialist groups Assembly provides an excellent opportunity to: Share the views and needs of your committee and members Contribute to the debate on the continuing development of the BCS Listen to presentations from some of the Society's senior officers and staff Find out what other Groups within the BCS SG community have been up to Share ideas with colleagues and catch up with old friends I would therefore ask that all SGs try to ensure that they send two representatives to the event. Please discuss with your colleagues which Group members will be attending and then contact the Specialist Group Support Team at either sg@hq.bcs.org.uk or 01793 417 472 with the details of your final delegates. Please ensure that this information, which should include details of any special dietary requirements, is provided by Friday 7 March. Former BCS President Brian Oakley will then lead a tour of Bletchley Park during which we hope to be able to see both the Bombe = and Colossus machines in action as well as visiting the computer museum. SG Treasurers, and others interested in the new Centralised Accounting Services, will also have the opportunity to speak to our finance = experts about the pilot scheme that will be starting in May. The Specialist groups Assembly provides an excellent opportunity to: = Share the views and needs of your committee and members Contribute to the = debate on the continuing development of the BCS Listen to presentations from = some of the Society's senior officers and staff Find out what other Groups = within the BCS SG community have been up to Share ideas with colleagues and = catch up with old friends I would therefore ask that all SGs try to ensure that they send two representatives to the event. Please discuss with your colleagues which Group members will be attending and then contact the Specialist Group Support Team at either sg@hq.bcs.org.uk or 01793 417 472 with the = details of your final delegates. Please ensure that this information, which should include details of any special dietary requirements, is provided by = Friday 7 March. I look forward to seeing you at what promises to be an excellent day. Yours sincerely Brian Layzell Chair, Specialist Groups Assembly Where is Bletchley Park? My personal opinion is that the BCS SIGs should be accessible. Where a SIG makes charges for participation I think these should be structured so as not to exclude on financial grounds, and I'd like to see the BCS require this of the SIGs, in keeping with the spirit of the organisation as a whole. AFAIR a key aim of the BCS is to promote professional standards that can be trusted worldwide, and so it must be accessible mainly on the basis of merit rather than wealth. This requirement might mean that SIGS have to keep charges affordable to all including students, retired, the unemployed and self-employed, or have a scale of charges adapted to these groups as well as other individuals and corporates, or provide opportunities for participation of similar kinds at a range of costs. Although a healthy reserve allows the OOPS SIG to be creative and professional in the activities it supports, I'm concerned that the OOPS committee's (former?) pricing policy effectively inhibits some of the SIG's membership from attending the conference and some other OOPS events. Immo, I feel we should ask the specialist groups co-ordinator for their opinion or policy on this issue in general. A few other SIGs seem to operate in a decidedly commercial and restrictive way which may not be good for the BCS, while most I know of make only nominal charges.
